The United States confirmed Monday that North Korea launched a missile that flew over Japan.

The missile did not pose a threat to North America, according to a Pentagon spokesman.

"We assess North Korea conducted a missile launch within the last 90 minutes," Col. Rob Manning said in a statement. "We are still in the process of assessing this launch. North American Aerospace Defense Command determined the missile launch from North Korea did not pose a threat to North America."

The Pentagon is working closely with the U.S. Pacific Command, Strategic Command and NORAD, and will provide an update "as soon as possible," he added. (Yonhap)
