Donald Trump Jr. delivered a stunning self     DATE: 2024-05-23 07:39:41

Wednesday wasn't a good day for the Trump family.

Donald the elder had not one but two attempts to make himself look tough backfire in spectacular fashion — first releasing a literally incredible letter to the prime minister of Turkey that may as well have been written in sparkly gel pen or Comic Sans, and then a picture of Nancy Pelosi berating him that didn't exactly tell the story he clearly thought it did.

Now Donald Trump Jr. has accidentally revealed a little too much about his family dynamic in an interview with Fox host Sean Hannity.

Continuing his inexplicable insistence that nepotism and trading on your famous family name is only bad when that name isn't Trump, Don Jr. was going in on Joe Biden's son Hunter for his appointments to various boards including one in Ukraine, and his recent admission that being the vice-president's son may have benefited his career.

Then Junior said the thing.

It's likely that Trump Jr. switched up his second-person perspective mid-sentence, and by "when you're the father[...] they own you, Sean," he meant the father owns the son. (He also could have meant that Trump Sr. owns Sean Hannity, on which, no comment.)

But there's no interpretation of his characterization here that comes off as particularly flattering to the Trump boys.

Given the president is on record declaring his love for nepotism, and Don Jr.'s an executive VP of the company his great-grandmother and grandfather founded, it certainly doesn't track when he acts mad about other people getting positions that enrich them on the strength of their daddy's name and influence.
