Rome spent $57,000 on the world's saddest excuse for a Christmas tree

Christmas trees come in all different shapes and sizes.

There are tall, bushy ones. Miniature ones that sit on your table top. Fake ones. Real ones.

Then there's this 65ft one in Rome's Piazza Venezia, which cost a solid €48,000 ($57,000) in transport fees and pretty much has more baubles than pine needles:

The tree has been drawing a mixture of criticism and pity since it was put up in the square earlier this month.

Many people on social media have been mourning its untimely demise.

The tree even has its own Twitter account now, and a solid 5000+ followers.

"Spelacchio" (which roughly translates as "mangy") is now rapidly entering meme territory.

RIP.
